Meet Mercy.
Mercy Bermudez is a Cuban-American singer and songwriter from Miami to Los Angeles, now living in Southern California and Sedona, AZ. Once described by critic Robert Hillburn as “an intense, yet disciplined singer. More than her moves, however, her vocals are consistently rousing”.
Starting out as a classical ballet and jazz dancer, she realized music and song had chosen her when she landedher first audition as a singer having had no prior vocal experience. The experience came after, on the road. As a lead vocalist, Mercy performed five sets a night, six nights a week singing a wide variety of material for a couple of years.
Mercy was the lead singer for L.A.’s seminal performing & recording artists “The Heaters”. They released two albums on Arista and Columbia Records.
One of L.A.'s most loved and popular bands, The Heaters consistently sold outnights at the Whisky, Starwood and The Bottom Line in NYC. They toured throughout the United States opening for acts like Talking Heads, Van Halen and Cheap Trick. CLICK ON NEWS for The Heaters "American Dream" new release on Omnivore Record August 19 2016
During the 90‘s, after her stint with The Heaters, Phil Spector heard something special in her voice, and they worked together for several years in hope of recording something new until fate intervened.
After a decade long sabbatical, music chose her once again. After sitting in with some local musicians, the club owner asked her to put something together for a Valentines Day concert and she has been singing ever since continuing to go deeper within to interpret the songs she loves in fresh and creative ways.
The vehicle for the wide variety of songs is “Outside the Box”, an eclectic acoustic groove quartet described by Dan Engler of Kudos “Those most familiar with Outside the Box rave about the band's versatility. If there is such a thing as a typical OTB performance, the audience can expect to hear a stylistic treasure trove of everything from the Gypsy Kings to Buena Vista Social Club to the Beach Boys to Aretha Franklin. The joy with which the group creates its music is contagious”.
In 2012 Mercy released “Me Llamo Mercy”. Originally intended as a tribute of love to my parents and their culture, Me Llamo Mercy has received many positive responses and reviews, including final consideration by the Grammy’s in 2012. The CD was produced by Curt Bisquera and featured world class Cuban musicians, Luis Conte, Carlitos del Puerto and John Beasley. The CD is receiving extensive airplay on Pandora and Spotify.
La Cubanita’s Orchestra was created with some of Sedona’s best musicians, to perform the music on the CDand other great Cuban songs, whose line-up included Larry Czarnecki, one of Northern AZ’s best guitarist and songwriting partner for many songs on “Me Llamo Mercy” CD.
After serendipitously meeting Grammy nominated Cuban pianist and arranger Marcos Crego, “The Cuban Groove” came into being, focusing on Cuban Music from the 40’s through the 90’s. and re-arranged jazz and latin standards with infectious Afro Cuban rhythms.
In response to many of Outside The Box’s and Cuban Groove’s fans, Mercy is combining the best of both musical worlds by bringing back OTB’s favorite songs, in Soul, Pop, Jazz standards, R&B, Girl Group, and Cuban songs from the CD and the best of the Cuban Groove to create an eclectic and exciting mix of great songs, in Spanish and English, performed with the energy and joy they’re known for. OTB carefully selects all their songs with much love, no matter what style ordecade they come from. As long as the groove is great, the melody is strong and catchy, and lyrics meaningful,we’ll play!
“It’s all about the Love of living what you love.”
